If you are shopping for a Rebuild alternative, you are probably not unhappy with the idea of AI estimating. You are trying to figure out which approach fits how your company actually works. That is the right question, and it is harder to answer than any feature chart suggests.

This essay is a framework for comparing AI restoration estimating tools, including Rebuild, Wave, CapOut and x.build, along with Axiom, which has published its own side-by-side view. I will stay neutral on the other products and focus on the questions that separate good fits from bad ones.

Start with the output, not the demo

Every estimating tool looks impressive in a demo. The more useful question is what lands on your estimator's desk afterwards. Is it a file that opens directly in Xactimate? A PDF someone has to re-key? A view inside a separate portal?

Most carriers and TPAs work in Xactimate, a Verisk product, and some use Symbility. If the output does not fit that reality, the time you save drafting is lost on the back end. Axiom, for example, exports a native .esx file that reprices on the shop's own price list. Its own phrasing is blunt: not a PDF, not a portal.

Ask what a Rebuild alternative takes in

A good option should work with what your crew already captures, not force a new documentation habit. Look at the input side carefully:

  • Can it take photos from the tools you already use? Axiom accepts drag-and-drop, its iOS app, and shareable links from CompanyCam, Google Drive or DocuSketch.
  • Where do measurements come from? Options worth checking include 3D scans, existing ESX files, 2D PDFs and typed rooms.
  • What happens with paper sketches? Axiom can trace a photo of a hand-drawn sketch into an editable floor plan.

Ask what happens when the tool is unsure

This is the question I would put at the top of any evaluation. When photos do not clearly show whether drywall was wet above the flood cut, what does the tool do? Some tools fill gaps automatically. Axiom's scope assistant asks the estimator a question instead of guessing.

Neither approach is magic. But silent guesses tend to resurface as supplement fights. Questions resolved upfront tend not to.

Ask who has the final word

In Axiom's workflow, nothing is final until an estimator reviews and approves it room by room. Whatever tool you consider, find out exactly where the human ai estimating software sign-off happens and how the review workspace supports it. Estimates still need to line up with the IICRC standards, especially S500 for water losses, and a reviewer is the one who confirms that.

Ask about scope beyond the first estimate

Estimating is not only about drafting new estimates. Ask whether a Rebuild alternative helps with the rest of the claim. Axiom offers three workflows: Photos (photo to estimate), PDF to Xactimate (converting an existing Xactimate estimate PDF into an ESX) and Compare (carrier and contractor estimates combined for line-by-line review). Coverage spans mitigation and reconstruction, with mitigation, put-back and exterior job types.

Ask how pricing scales

Pricing models differ a lot across this category, so compare them against your own volume. At the time of writing (October 2026), Axiom's Starter plan is $899 per month with 15 estimates, Pro is $2,500 per month with 50 estimates and unlimited conversions and comparisons, and Enterprise is custom. Every plan includes unlimited users with no per-seat fees, and allowances reset monthly.

A short scoring sheet

  1. Native Xactimate output: yes or no?
  2. Uses your existing photo and measurement sources?
  3. Asks questions when unsure?
  4. Clear room-by-room human approval?
  5. Helps with supplements and comparisons?
  6. Pricing that fits your monthly volume?

Run your top two or three options against the same real loss file and the same scoring sheet. The best Rebuild alternative for one company may not be the best for another. What matters is which tool your estimators trust enough to use every day.
